Bean Bag Styling Ideas for Every Room in Your Home
If you've ever fallen in love with a piece of furniture and then spent way too long figuring out exactly where it belongs in your home - you're in very good company. We hear from our customers all the time about how their Mooi Living bean bag started in the living room, migrated to the bedroom, got claimed by a teenager, and ended up poolside by summer. And honestly? That's exactly how it should be.
But if you're at the beginning of that journey - trying to figure out which bean bag works where, what size actually fits, and how to style it so your home looks intentional rather than like you just had a delivery - this one's for you. Room by room, here's how to make a Mooi Living bean bag work beautifully in your home.
In the Living Room - Make it a moment
The living room is where most people start, and it's where a bean bag can really earn its place as proper furniture, not just a casual extra. The key? Don't be shy about size. The most common mistake we see is going too small. A bean bag that looked generous online can disappear completely in a real living room, especially if you have high ceilings or an open-plan layout.
Our Serena Armchair is the living room hero; generous, deeply comfortable, and structured enough to look like it belongs rather than like something that wandered in from a student share house. Pair it with the Boss Ottoman as a footrest or a casual side table, and you've created a proper little zone, the kind of spot people make a beeline for the moment they walk in.
If you love the idea of something a little more unexpected - a real talking point, the Bouclé Indoor Daybed is your pick. It reads more like a chaise lounge than a traditional bean bag, and the bouclé texture brings that lovely warmth and depth that makes a room feel considered. We've had customers tell us it's the first thing guests ask about. That's the one.
Styling tip: anchor your living room bean bag with a floor lamp positioned just behind it and a small tray or ottoman in front. This turns a seat into a destination - and that's when a room really starts to come together.

In the Bedroom - Your permission to be selfish
Here's a thought: when was the last time you had a spot in your bedroom that was just for you? Not for folding laundry, not for charging your phone, not for piling things you'll deal with later. Just a spot to sit, breathe, and be.
A bean bag in the bedroom does exactly that. It becomes the place you land at the end of a long day before you're ready for bed. The Sunday morning coffee chair. The spot you curl up with a book while someone else has the TV remote. And because it's yours - in your room, nobody else gets to claim it.
For a bedroom, you want something that feels intimate rather than big. Our Boss Bean Bag is perfect here — the corduroy is soft and warm to the touch (exactly right for a sleeping space), and in Caramel or Beige it works beautifully alongside timber furniture, linen bedding, and the warm, layered aesthetic that so many of our customers love. It's compact enough to tuck neatly into a corner without crowding the room, and big enough to actually be comfortable.
If your bedroom has a little more space to play with, the Boss Bean Bag in 100% Cotton Canvas brings genuine Lounger energy - it holds its shape beautifully and looks just as good whether you're in it or not. Which matters, because when it's sitting empty in the corner of your bedroom, you want it to look like a style choice, not an afterthought.
Styling tip: position it in a corner with a floor lamp and a small stack of your favourite books or a candle nearby. Add a throw draped over the arm. Five minutes of effort, and your bedroom corner goes from wasted space to the most inviting spot in the house.

Kids Corner - The one they'll fight over
There is nothing quite like the joy of watching a child absolutely lose their mind over a bean bag. It becomes their reading chair, their gaming throne, their fort construction zone, and their very strong opinion about what belongs in their room. Which is lovely, until you have two kids and one bean bag.
For little ones aged 1 to 5, the Mini Canvas Triangle is sized just right - small bodies can climb in and out independently, it comes in colours that make a kids' room look curated rather than chaotic, and the washed canvas wipes clean. (You'll be grateful for that one.)
For older kids and teenagers who have very strong opinions about their bedroom and would never be caught dead in something that looks babyish - the Mooi Mini Cord Chair in Olive Green, Beige or Caramel is genuinely cool. It's a mini version of our grown-up Cord Chair and it looks it. Teenagers will actually use it, which is the real victory.
For a shared playroom or rumpus room with a bit more floor space, the full-size Double Boss Bean Bag seats two children side by side - ideal for gaming sessions, movie afternoons, or the chaotic rainy-day energy that every Australian family knows well.
Safety note: all Mooi Living bean bags come with zipper pullers removed as standard - this is an Australian safety requirement, and it means little ones can't accidentally access the bean filling inside. We take this seriously, so you don't have to worry about it.

In the Home Office - Because thinking doesn't always happen at a desk
Some of the best thinking happens when you step away from the screen. A brainstorm on a call, reading through a brief, working through a problem that needs a different kind of focus - none of that actually requires a desk. What it requires is somewhere comfortable to sit that isn't quite as committed as the sofa.
A bean bag in the home office fills that gap perfectly. It's not your work chair - it's the secondary seat that gives your body (and your brain) a change of scenery without you having to leave the room. And once you've got one in there, you'll wonder how you managed without it.
Keep the shape upright and contained for a home office - this isn't the place for a sprawling lounger. The Mooi Cord Chair in Olive sits beautifully alongside timber desks and bookshelves, and gives the space that warm, layered feel that's so popular in modern home office styling. If your office leans a little more formal, the Serena Armchair has the structure and presence to hold its own alongside proper office furniture.
Styling tip: put a small side table or stool next to it - somewhere to rest a coffee, a notepad, or your phone. That's what makes it genuinely functional rather than just a nice idea.

In the Reading Nook - The cosiest corner in the house
Every house-proud woman we know has a version of this dream: a corner of the house that's just for reading. A lamp, a good book, a warm drink, and absolutely nobody asking where anything is. The reading nook is attainable, and a bean bag is the easiest way to get there.
Browse our curated Reading Nook collection — we've done the picking for you. The star of the show is the Cotton Canvas Triangle. The shape is the secret - it puts you in that perfect semi-reclined position where your back is supported, your legs can stretch out, and you don't have to actively hold yourself up. You just... settle in. The cotton canvas is quiet too - no synthetic crinkle or rustle when you shift around, which sounds like a small thing until you've tried to read on a noisy bean bag for two hours.
Add the Boss Ottoman alongside it for your feet or your book pile, a floor lamp just over your shoulder (behind you, so the light falls onto the page rather than into your eyes), and you've got yourself a reading nook worth showing off on Instagram. We've seen it done. It's genuinely beautiful.

On the Patio or Balcony - outdoor living, upgraded
Australian outdoor furniture has a reputation problem. Wicker goes grey and splinters. Metal gets too hot to sit on by 10am. Plastic chairs are fine until they're not. If you've ever found yourself half-heartedly sitting on outdoor furniture that you don't actually like, you know what we mean.
Our outdoor bean bags are made from Olefin - a premium fabric that's UV-resistant, water-repellent, mould-resistant, chlorine-safe, and genuinely soft to sit on. It doesn't feel like outdoor furniture. It feels like proper upholstery that has been cleverly engineered to handle everything the Australian climate throws at it. Leave it out in a summer storm, wipe it down, and it looks exactly the same.
For a larger patio or alfresco area, the Lachlan Sunlounger is our pick - it's full-length, beautifully proportioned, and in Natural Beige, Taupe or Stone it looks at home on timber decking, concrete, or natural stone. Two Lachlans with an Outdoor Ottoman between them is one of our favourite outdoor setups - stylish, practical, and something your guests will genuinely comment on.
For a compact balcony, the Bora Bora Chair is smarter — its upright silhouette takes up less floor space while still giving you a proper, comfortable seat. Pair it with the Outdoor Ottoman and a small side table, and your balcony becomes somewhere you actually want to spend time.
One thing to be clear about - and we say this with love: please don't put your indoor bean bags outside. Cotton Canvas, Bouclé, and Corduroy are all indoor-only fabrics. The UV will fade them, the moisture will damage them, and it will break our hearts a little. If your space gets sun or rain, you need Olefin.

Poolside - Where Mooi really comes into its own
Poolside is where our outdoor range was designed to live, and it shows. The Olefin fabric handles chlorine, dries fast after splashes, and doesn't fade in the fierce Australian sun. You can genuinely leave it poolside all summer without babying it - and it will come out the other side looking great.
On the pool deck, the Isla Sunlounger is a classic - wide, full-length, and comfortable for hours at a time. For something with a little more presence and a more resort-style silhouette, step up to the Lachlan Sunlounger.
And then there are the pool floats - which are in a different category entirely. The Santorini Pool Float and the Lana Lounger are designed to be used in the water - not as an inflatable that slowly deflates while you're on it, but as a proper floating lounger that supports your weight and lets you actually relax. The Lana is our double-seater option and works just as well on the pool deck as it does in the water, which makes it probably the most versatile piece in our whole range.
Quick reminder: always use EPS polystyrene beans in your outdoor and poolside bean bags - never foam. Foam absorbs moisture and will go mouldy over time. EPS beans are moisture-resistant and the right choice for any outdoor use.

In the Garden - Laid back is the vibe
Bean bags on grass is one of those ideas that seems obvious once you've done it. For a summer afternoon in the garden, a kids' party, an outdoor movie night, or just a lazy weekend with nowhere to be - a few bean bags scattered across the lawn instantly sets the tone. Relaxed. Welcoming. The kind of garden setup that makes people want to stay.
Our Outdoor Reversible Triangle is a great garden option - low-profile, lightweight, made from Olefin so it handles grass and weather without complaint, and the reversible design means you get two colour options in one. On a lawn it looks deliberately styled in a way that upright chair shapes sometimes don't.
The Bora Bora Chair works beautifully for garden entertaining where people will be sitting and chatting for a while - it offers more back support and sits a little higher off the ground, which makes it easier to get in and out of after a few hours.

Your Most Common Questions, Answered
Which bean bag is best for a small indoor space?
Go for a chair shape rather than a lounger - upright profiles have a much smaller footprint. The Mooi Cord Chair is our top pick for smaller rooms and apartments. It's adult-sized and genuinely comfortable, but compact enough to tuck into a corner without eating the whole room.
Can I use an outdoor Mooi bean bag inside?
Absolutely - Olefin works indoors too, particularly in sunrooms, rumpus rooms, or anywhere that gets a lot of natural light. The practical trade-off is that it has a slightly different hand-feel to our indoor fabrics - a little more functional, a little less plush. Worth knowing before you choose.
How do I stop my bean bag from going flat?
EPS beans compress over time with regular use - that's completely normal. When your bean bag starts to feel flatter than you'd like, simply top it up. You usually only need to add 20–30% more volume to restore the feel - you don't need to replace everything. We have a full guide on how to fill your bean bag if you need a hand.
How do I make my bean bag look styled rather than just sitting there?
Context is everything. A bean bag on its own in the middle of a room just looks left out. A bean bag in a corner with a lamp, an ottoman nearby, and a throw over the arm looks like a considered design choice. The furniture around it is what makes it look intentional - not the bean bag itself.
Are Mooi Living bean bags safe for young children?
Yes - all our bean bags come with zipper pullers removed, which is an Australian safety standard designed to prevent young children from opening the cover and accessing the bean filling. We'd still recommend supervising very young children around bean bags, and as a general rule, bean bags are not a safe sleeping surface for babies under 12 months.
What's the difference between bean filling and foam filling?
EPS beans are lighter, moisture-resistant, and give that classic sink-in feel. Crumbed foam gives a softer, more sofa-like comfort and tends to hold its shape longer before needing a top-up. Many of our customers love a mix of both - the foam reduces the squeaky sound that EPS can sometimes make, and the beans keep things from getting too squishy. Just remember: foam outdoors is a no-go. Always use EPS beans for outdoor and poolside bean bags. Also - Foam is not a great option for larger bean bags, as the inner bags struggle with the weight of the foam.
